Gundula Stojanova Gruen, best known as 'Magic Violin', is a virtuoso violinist, singer, best-selling author, teacher, and ethnomusicologist with a decades-long strong career in Balkan and Eastern European music. She has founded and led multiple ensembles, including the London Gypsy Orchestra (2005-2015), the Balkan Village Band, Tatcho Drom, the Magic Violin String Trio, and the Bluebelle Jazz Trio. With such a trajectory, it's a bit hard to keep everything in order, and early this 2026, she decided that we should breathe new life into her online presence and build a presence that actually showcases her expertise, while maintaining the emotion and vibrance of her memories intact.
Gundula is an amazing musician. Very professional, dedicated, acclaimed by audiences around Europe, and she's built a legacy in her craft. She’s been doing this for decades, and her skill has given me chills more than once. We wanted her growing YouTube channel to reflect this, instead of looking like a messy archive of " memories of everything I've ever done."
We decided to organize her presence into 4 main verticals: Professional performances, community ensembles, lessons and tutorials, and personality videos, aka, the ones that don't fit into any of the aforementioned categories but she'd still like to keep.
For the performance side of her channel, I wanted the visuals to feel cinematic, like a high-end editorial spread made of thumbnails. We went with these deep, moody backgrounds — heavy on the colors, the stages, and the memories — to let the actual scenery do the talking.
One of the biggest calls we made was sticking to the original scripts. If a piece is in Cyrillic, we write it that way, and then, of course, we add the translation; but, since her practice is rooted in honoring and bringing life to traditional, historical pieces of folklore, we aren't romanizing everything just to make it more digestible for an algorithm. We found that this strategy is more recognizable to true enthusiasts than romanized versions, adding an immediate layer of niche authority. It’s about respect for the craft and the migrants behind it.
We do this for the people who truly love Balkan and Eastern European music and recognize the soul of a piece by its native name, but also for the ones who are new to it and curious enough to wander through her videos. It’s bold, it’s authoritative, and it feels like the stage she’s earned; and honestly, we've noticed it is a great move, since this approach is one of the reasons behind a quick 50% increase in watch time by generating curiosity and attracting an audience looking for virtuoso-level performances.
